How Abbreviations Work in Crosswords
Crossword constructors use abbreviations in two ways. First, the clue itself contains an abbreviation — for example, "Mon. or Tue." clues the answer DAY. Second, the answer is an abbreviation — when a clue contains words like "briefly", "for short", "abbr.", or "initially", the answer is likely an abbreviated word.
Common signal words that indicate an abbreviated answer include: briefly, for short, initially, in brief, abbr., shortened, condensed, informally. When you see these in a clue, expect the answer to be an abbreviation like EST, CPT, or MON rather than a full word.
Tips for Solving Abbreviation Clues
- Count the letters — most abbreviations are 2-4 letters, so check the grid length first
- Look for signal words — "briefly", "for short", "abbr." all indicate abbreviated answers
- Check the category — military clues suggest ranks (SGT, LT, COL), time clues suggest months or days
- Roman numerals are common — M=1000, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1
- Direction clues — compass points N, S, E, W appear very frequently in crosswords
